When PNG to JPG is the wrong move
For a photograph it is almost always right. PNG stores every pixel exactly, which is enormous and pointless for an image made of gradients and noise, so converting to JPG typically takes eighty to ninety-five per cent off with nothing you can see at normal viewing size.
For a screenshot, a logo, a chart or anything with text in it, think twice. JPG works by discarding fine colour detail, and hard edges are exactly where that shows: text picks up a faint halo, flat colour develops mottling, and lines get soft. The file will still be smaller, but it will look worse in a way people notice. If the PNG is that kind of image, the PNG compressor will often halve it losslessly by cutting the palette instead, which costs you nothing visible.
And if there is any transparency, converting to JPG destroys it. JPG has no alpha channel at all, so a transparent background is flattened onto white, permanently. An icon meant to sit on a coloured page will arrive in a white box.

What happens to a transparent background?
It becomes white, and it cannot be recovered afterwards. JPG has no alpha channel, so transparency has to be flattened onto something. If the image needs its transparent background, keep it as a PNG and use the PNG compressor to make it smaller instead.
Why does my screenshot look blotchy?
Because JPG is built for photographs and a screenshot is the opposite of one. The format discards fine colour detail, which is invisible in a gradient and very visible around text and hard edges. Push the quality above 90, or keep it as a PNG and cut its palette instead, which on a screenshot is usually a bigger saving with nothing lost.
How do I get under a specific file size?
Turn on "Compress to a target size" and type the figure. We search for the highest quality that still fits under it and then tell you where we landed, which is faster and more accurate than nudging the quality slider and re-checking.
Can I convert back to PNG afterwards?
You can, and it will not restore anything. Converting back gives you a lossless copy of the damaged image, at several times the size. Whatever JPG discarded is gone, so keep the original PNG if you might need it again.
Are my PNG files uploaded to convert them?
No. The PNG is decoded and the JPG is written by your own browser, in this tab. There is no upload endpoint in the site for a file to go to, which you can check in your network tools: convert something and watch that no request carries it. Disconnect from the network after the page loads and it still works.
Does this remove EXIF, GPS and AI metadata?
Yes, every time, and there is no way to turn it off. The image is decoded to pixels and encoded again from those pixels alone, so EXIF and GPS, the XMP packet, embedded colour profiles, and any Content Credentials or AI-generation tags the file arrived with do not survive. There is no switch for this, because there is no way to keep them. What no compressor can remove is a watermark written into the pixels themselves, such as the invisible marks some image generators add: those survive re-encoding here and everywhere else.
