Why FLAC has fewer controls

FLAC is lossless. After decoding, the samples are exactly the samples that entered the encoder, so choosing a lower audio bitrate is not one of its powers. The final rate rises and falls with the music: silence and simple tones compress well, dense noise compresses poorly. A target-size control could not guarantee a result without changing the audio, so there is no such control here.

Re-encoding FLAC to FLAC with the same channels and metadata does nothing useful. A different encoder setting may move the size by a small amount, and can just as easily make it larger, while the sound remains identical. When neither control would change the file, this tool keeps the original and says that the remaining bytes are the audio rather than manufacturing a percentage saved.

Cover artwork is the cleanest exception. A high-resolution JPEG or PNG can occupy megabytes inside an otherwise efficient album track, and removing it changes no sample. Text tags are much smaller, but they can be dropped in the same remux. If the channel count stays unchanged, the FLAC packets can be copied into a clean container without downloading the FLAC encoder.

Mono is a larger but destructive lever. Two identical channels in an interview contain redundant content, so combining them can bring a real saving and the new single channel is then stored losslessly. Stereo music does not contain redundant channels in that sense: downmixing changes its spatial balance permanently, even though FLAC faithfully preserves the downmixed result.

This tool keeps the original sample rate. Reducing a high-resolution master to CD rate can make it smaller, but that is resampling and discards information; presenting it as ordinary lossless compression would blur an important line.

Why can I not choose a FLAC bitrate?

Because FLAC does not encode to a selected bitrate. It stores the samples losslessly and uses as many bits as their content needs. A bitrate box would either be ignored or require changing the audio, so this page does not offer one.

Can FLAC be compressed much further without quality loss?

Usually not. FLAC is already a compressed lossless representation. Large embedded artwork can be removed for a substantial free saving, and an unnecessary channel can be dropped, but an untagged file with useful stereo audio may shrink by almost nothing.

Does stripping metadata change the sound?

No. Titles, artist names, comments and cover images sit outside the audio samples. Removing them affects how a music library describes and displays the track, but not what the decoder plays.

Is downmixing to mono lossless?

The resulting mono signal is stored losslessly, but the change from two channels to one is not reversible. It is sensible when both channels carry the same speech and wrong when stereo placement or ambience matters.

Why did nanofile keep my original FLAC?

The attempted output was not smaller, or there was no metadata or unused channel to remove. Returning a larger lossless file would not help, so the engine keeps your source and explains that the remaining size belongs to the audio.

Does this reduce high-resolution FLAC to CD quality?

No. The sample rate is preserved. Resampling a 96 kHz or 192 kHz master to 44.1 kHz can reduce size, but it removes information and would need an explicit control and warning rather than being hidden inside a lossless tool.

Is my FLAC sent to a server?

No. The container is read and written in this browser tab. If changing channels requires the FLAC encoder, its code is downloaded separately, while your audio remains on this device.
