How to convert a file

A file can go more than one way. An M4A becomes an MP3 to play anywhere, or a WAV to edit and transcribe, and only you know which you came for.

Converting versus compressing

They are different jobs and it is worth being clear which one you want. Compressing keeps the format and makes the file smaller: a JPG in, a smaller JPG out. Converting changes the format, and the size may go up, down or nowhere in particular. A JPG becoming a PNG gets several times bigger; an MP3 becoming a WAV gets about ten times bigger. That is not a fault, it is what the destination format is.

Most conversions here are about compatibility rather than size. Something in your chain will not open the file you have: a car stereo that refuses OGG, a transcription tool that only takes PCM, a print shop that wants JPG, an upload form that has never heard of AVIF or HEIC. The right conversion is the one that makes the file work, and the page for it should tell you what that costs.

The direction matters more than people expect. Converting to a lossy format from a lossless one is a single clean pass and the results are good. Converting between two lossy formats means the second encoder is working from audio or pixels the first one already picked over, and the two rounds of damage compound. Every page on this site says which of those two it is doing, and sets its defaults accordingly.

Questions

Are my files uploaded to convert them?

No. There is no upload endpoint in this site for a file to go to. Every conversion decodes and re-encodes in your own browser, which you can check in your network tools: convert something and watch that no request carries it. Disconnect from the network after the page loads and it still works.

What can I convert here?

Images between WebP, PNG, JPG, AVIF, HEIC and SVG, and audio between M4A, MP3, WAV, OGG and FLAC. Every live pair has its own page, listed above. Video is out of scope on purpose and belongs on vidshift.io.

Is there a file size or length limit?

No. Because the work happens on your own machine there is no server rule to hit, no queue and no per-file charge. A two hour recording or a folder of two hundred photos is limited by your laptop rather than by anyone else.

Will converting make my file smaller?

Sometimes, and it is not what conversion is for. WAV to MP3 is about 90% smaller; MP3 to WAV is about ten times larger; JPG to PNG grows severalfold. If size is the goal, compress instead: the format stays the same and the whole point is fewer bytes.

Does the quality drop when I convert?

It depends which direction. From a lossless source, such as WAV or FLAC to MP3, the encoder works from the original and one careful pass is genuinely transparent. Between two lossy formats, such as M4A to MP3, the damage compounds, which is why those pages default to a higher bitrate than the file they are reading.

Do the tags and metadata survive?

On audio, yes by default: the artist, album and title cross into the new file unless you turn on the strip switch. On images, no: the picture is decoded to pixels and re-encoded, so nothing it arrived with, including EXIF and GPS, can reach the output. Each page states which of those it does.

Is this file converter free?

Yes. The work runs on your own CPU, so there is no per-file cost to pass on, no account, no watermark and no daily limit.
