When PNG is the right answer for an AVIF

Two cases, and outside them JPG is usually better. The first is transparency: AVIF carries an alpha channel and JPG does not, so a logo, icon or cut-out saved as AVIF has to become a PNG or lose its background to a white rectangle. The second is anything about to be edited further, because PNG is lossless and will not accumulate damage each time it is saved.

For an ordinary photograph going into an email or onto a website, PNG is the wrong tool and it is worth being blunt about that. It will be several times the size of the equivalent JPG for no visible benefit, because PNG was designed for flat colour and hard edges and photographs are neither.

If the PNG comes out larger than you can use, the answer is not a setting on this page. Drop it on the PNG compressor afterwards: on flat artwork, cutting the palette often halves it again with nothing visible lost, and the transparency survives that too.

Will transparency survive?

Yes. Both formats have a full alpha channel, so a transparent AVIF becomes a transparent PNG with nothing flattened. This is the main reason to choose PNG here over JPG, which has no alpha at all and would put white behind the image permanently.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

Because AVIF is one of the best lossy compressors available and PNG is lossless. AVIF discards detail your eye is worst at noticing and stores what is left with a modern codec; PNG records every pixel exactly. Five to ten times larger is normal for a photograph, and it is the format working as designed.

Does this restore quality the AVIF lost?

No, and nothing can. Whatever was discarded when the AVIF was written is gone. PNG being lossless means this conversion adds no further loss, which is a different and smaller promise than undoing the first one.

Should I use PNG or JPG?

PNG if there is transparency, or if the image is flat artwork, a screenshot or something with text in it, or if you are going to keep editing it. JPG for a photograph that is simply going somewhere, because it will be several times smaller for no visible difference.

Are my AVIF files uploaded to convert them?

No. The AVIF is decoded and the PNG is written by your own browser, in this tab. There is no upload endpoint in the site for a file to go to, which you can check in your network tools: convert something and watch that no request carries it. Disconnect from the network after the page loads and it still works.

Does this remove EXIF, GPS and AI metadata?

Yes, every time, and there is no way to turn it off. The image is decoded to pixels and encoded again from those pixels alone, so EXIF and GPS, the XMP packet, embedded colour profiles, and any Content Credentials or AI-generation tags the file arrived with do not survive. There is no switch for this, because there is no way to keep them. What no compressor can remove is a watermark written into the pixels themselves, such as the invisible marks some image generators add: those survive re-encoding here and everywhere else.
