What OGG compression changes
Ogg is a container. The audio inside is usually Opus or Vorbis, both lossy. This page re-encodes to Opus: lowering the bitrate makes a predictable saving and cannot be undone. Re-encoding an existing Opus file adds another lossy generation, so keep the original recording when you still have it.
Opus is markedly more efficient than MP3 at the same bitrate, especially on speech. That is why the defaults sit lower than on the MP3 page. Compatibility is the trade: every browser and phone app of the last decade plays Opus in Ogg, but ageing car stereos and stubborn desktop software may not.
Mono and metadata are separate levers. Downmixing removes a channel for good. Stripping tags removes titles and artwork rather than sound, so a large cover can be a free saving while an untagged file barely moves.
If the file has to play on every device you can name, convert to MP3 instead. If it only has to play in a browser, a messenger app or a modern phone, staying with Opus usually keeps more quality in fewer bytes.

Is this Opus or Vorbis?
The output is Opus inside an Ogg container. Vorbis is older and less efficient at low bitrates; Opus is what modern browsers encode and what this page writes.
What bitrate should I use for Opus speech?
64 kbps mono is a strong everyday setting for interviews and voice notes. 96 kbps stereo suits music when you want a cautious result. Opus stays usable well below rates where MP3 collapses.
Can OGG compression be lossless?
No. Opus is lossy, and changing its bitrate discards information. Removing tags is lossless with respect to the sound, but it does not shrink the audio packets themselves.
Why might encoding fail in some browsers?
Opus encoding needs a WebCodecs audio encoder. Most current browsers provide one; if yours does not, the tool says the encode failed rather than uploading your file somewhere else.
Should I use MP3 instead?
Use MP3 when the file must play on old hardware or stubborn software. Use Opus in Ogg when the audience is browsers and modern apps: you will usually get better quality at a lower bitrate.
Does my audio get uploaded?
No. Decoding and encoding run in this tab. The page may download encoder support from the same origin rules as the rest of the site, but your recording never becomes a request.
